LEGO Machines and Mechanisms

Applicant: Helen Simmons, SSES Teacher

Target Population: SSES 5th Grade Students

Content Area of Project: STEM/Science

Amount of Grant: $1000.00 in 2011, $3,517 in 2010

This is the first project at SSES that fits perfectly into the Easton Learning Foundation STEM initiative. With the LEGO kits that have been requested, all 5th grade students will build and explore machines and mechanisms, study gearing, calibrate and capture wind, etc. Students will design his/her own machine connected to one of the curriculum science topics — space exploration, sound or light.

Samuel Staples Elementary School 5th Grade teachers (left to right) Courtney Maggi, Joe Clark and Helen Simmons received a check for $3,517 from the Easton Learning Foundation (ELF) to fund a new “LEGO Machines Lab.” This innovative, hands-on science lab will allow all 5th grade students to design and build mechanisms and machines. The lego curriculum introduces pre-engineering concepts in a fun and cooperative environment. ELF is focused on funding STEM related grants in Easton public schools.
