Each year the Connecticut Invention Convention (CIC) organization
invites schools statewide to participate in a science convention
held at University of Connecticut. In 2010, over 90 schools
participated, sending over 600 “inventors” from grades K-8. The
fourth grade team would like to allow our students the opportunity
to participate in this years CIC event, to be held on May
14th, 2011.
In order to prepare our students, we hosted a local Science Invention
Convention at SSES. All fourth graders had the opportunity
to create an invention and showcase their idea at our first
“SSES Fourth Grade Science Invention Convention.” From our
local convention, judges selected 12 finalists to represent SSES
at the statewide convention held at UCONN in May.
Our local Science Invention Convention at SSES was a culminating
event to a unit on inventions that was introduced in the
fourth grade classrooms during the month of March. Introductory
lessons exposed students to the concept of inventions, and
developed their knowledge for understanding how inventions
affect the quality of our lives. Subsequent lessons further developed
an understanding for how daily problems often spark ideas
for inventions. Students researched and examined the characteristics
of inventors and enhanced their understanding for how
inventions are created to solve problems or advance ideas.
